College Administrators, Educators, and Coaches Join Forces with the Distilled Spirits Industry to Launch New Million Dollar-Plus Program to Help Stop the Misuse of Alcohol on College Campuses

WHAT:
   An innovative, interactive CD program designed to help prevent the misuse of alcohol on college campuses.
   Developed by the Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by America's leading distillers.
   A comprehensive CD program set on a "virtual campus," using sony game technology, interactive video scenarios, and 3d animation to target at-risk populations of the student body: freshmen, greeks, student-athletes, and judicial policy offenders.
   Alcohol 101 plus™ also includes a "Virtual Bar," where a user can "virtually" drink and learn about how alcohol affects their individual blood alcohol concentration and how long it takes for their bac to return to zero; an interactive game developed by SONY, b4udrink, which tests a user's knowledge about alcohol; and, a "Virtual Brain," which conveys information about how alcohol affects the brain.
   Reflects input from a team of over 50 on-campus practitioners. Contributors include: U.S. Department of Education; National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA); and the Bacchus and Gamma Peer Education Network.

WHY:
   Among college students under the age of 21, 82 percent report using alcohol with in the past year and 69 percent report using alcohol within the last 30 days.
   One in five college athletes believe other students drinking adversely affects their involvement on an athletic team (or in other organized groups)
   College athletes are more likely than other students to say that getting drunk is an important reason for drinking.
   Research shows that alcohol, even small amounts, affects the ability of college students to learn and remember new information.
   Eighty percent of freshmen report they have used alcohol with in the past year. On average, they report consuming nearly six drinks per week.
   In 2000, alcohol-related fatality rates were nearly twice as large for 18-, 19-, and 20-year olds as for people aged 21 and older.
